Google Play Music has been the biggest success story of 2017, with its streaming service gaining nearly three billion users worldwide.
But for many users, the service has been crippled by a lack of offline access, and the streaming music service announced it would no longer allow users to play audio and video from their own devices.
“We’ve heard your feedback, and we know that the experience of offline listening is a major reason why people love Play Music so much,” Play Music CEO John Hanke wrote in a blog post today.
“We’re listening to that feedback and we’re working hard to improve the experience.”
Hanke says the company will continue to offer audio and text content from your own devices on the service, though he says that this will only happen if your device supports playback offline.
Play Music currently supports the following devices: iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Android phones.
If you have a Windows PC, you can still play audio from it.
If you’re using your device for other reasons, you’ll need to update your software to support offline playback.
The latest update for Windows is available for both 32-bit and 64-bit machines, and for Android you’ll have to wait until the end of the month for the latest release.
For all platforms, you will need to download and install a new version of your operating system to support playback offline, which will likely require downloading and installing the OS itself.
You can now watch all of your favorite podcasts in the background with the Play Music app in your browser, Hanke explained.
You’re now able to watch podcasts offline, too.
Play News has been available offline for some time, and you can now download a full-episode archive to listen to offline.
Google Play News and Play Music both now offer an option to subscribe to podcasts that are offline.
The company says it will continue providing a podcast calendar with new podcasts that will also be available offline.
For those that use Google Drive to organize and organize their content, Google is also rolling out a new offline sharing feature.
This means that you can share your files, folders, and files in a more organized way with other users with the new offline storage feature.
Google says it is working on more features for offline storage, but has not announced any plans for them yet.
